An old, familiar tune.

July 21, 2008

I was thinking today about things, situations, circumstances that are old and familiar to us, like an old, familiar tune.  Been around awhile, we know it by heart, and it is almost second nature to us.  These old, familiar tunes are just that:  OLD and FAMILIAR.  Worn out, not useful, and potentially damaging. Why?  Because we continue to rely on them, old, worn out behaviors, use them, when they have long since stopped being effective, when what they do is take away our energy in damaging ways, in addition to not bringing us any effective ways to meet our needs.

Have you worn out something familiar, a relationship, a habit, a coping mechanism- to the point that you don’t even remember WHY you use it anymore?  That is something I think that we could all identify with.

Do something, right now.  Think of one of those ineffective coping strategies that you still hang on to- that compulsive eating behavior when you are stressed; the drink when you have had it with your job, and then maybe two or three more; the yelling that you do with your kids when you are overtired; take a few minutes, right now, and think about that behavior for a moment or two.  Does that behavior work in any effective manner?  Does it get you what you really want- to be listened to, peace of mind, peace of heart, better communication with your kids?  BE HONEST……..

If the answer that you come up with is no, it is no longer effective for me, you have two choices……change your perspective; look at the problem AND the solution a different way.  Or, change the music, change the tune, turn the radio station.  It is time, OVERTIME, to do something different.  How much longer do we want to live an ineffective life?  How many more moments do we really want to waste in choosing behaviors that bring us misery?  That don’t bring one ounce of relief?  That are the same old tune that we hold onto just because it is how we have always done it?

I know two women I admire greatly here at wordpress, that took great steps in the last few weeks to give up an old, familiar tune, SMOKING, and sing a different tune, to live a different kind of life.  Sure, they may not have the music memorized yet, they may still need to look at the sheet music for a time, but they are trying, trying something new on for size, something that will most likely, work better than the old songs that they have sang to themselves for years.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE; DON’T WAIT-DO IT TODAY………

  7. Wow! Thanks for the inspiration; I shall cut, paste and print for continued inspiration! I have a few myself that should be reevaluated and perhaps thrown out to make room for better energies; smoking being number one. If I was able to stop drinking; I’m sure I can will myself to stop smoking. Thanks for the inspiration – I’ve really got to stop! PLL, CordieB.
