As some of you may know, via my Facebook account, tomorrow, March 4, 2009, I am hosting a candlelight vigil in my local community. It is to join with others all over the United States who will be doing the same. We are acknowledging the eve of the beginning of testimony regarding Prop 8 in California.
Prop 8 emerged as a backlash to the issuing of more than 18,000 LEGAL gay marriages last year in the state of California; constituents there who believe that marriage should only be between one man and one woman created a swell of support for Prop 8, which was a referrendum voted on at election time, to state that in California, marriage would only be between one man and one woman.
Therefore, all of the marriage licenses that were previously issued to gay couples last year could be considered null and void. Three couples have filed suit and are beginning testimony before the courts in San Francisco, and that begins March 5. Then, the court has 90 days to decide.
This is not an issue for just California, but for this entire nation. President Obama made it clear when he was running for President, that he did not want to deal with this on a national level, but was leaving it to the states to decide. However, the east coast is fast becoming pretty darned gay friendly in terms of civil unions and marriage. Not gay marriage as I have said here before: EQUAL MARRIAGE………. So, I believe that what happens in California, for better or for worse, will effect millions of us in other parts of the country.
PA had their own debate about this last year; with the changing of the guard in November, it kind of fell by the wayside, but I have no doubt that it will raise its ugly head again, another way to discriminate, and for groups that oppose equal marriage to basically say “no” to love.
I decided to gather people for this vigil, to bring attention to this important issue, and also to see who we have as allies here in the state. To bring that energy together which can be so powerful. So, we gather tomorrow evening, March 4, at 8:00 PM in downtown Scranton, PA. If you are local to there, please, come and support us if you feel so inclined. Bring a sign, bring a prayer, bring whatever you like that can help you to feel part of this…..
If you are not any closer than your computer connection, then please, send your spirits, blessings, prayers, and warm, loving thoughts our way. I know that in the midst of friends, I will feel the surge of your presence with us. And we all make a difference for the better in this. In your corner of the world, talk about this, light a candle, say a prayer, be ever present with those of us who are gathered…..
I send my love and gratitude to you, as always…… Peace and blessings to you and yours!!!!
